Kate Marchuk

Bio

In a previous life, Kate was a lawyer. Today, her world is entirely different. Though a lingering touch of imposter syndrome occasionally makes her hesitate to claim the title, she is an artist.

Kate’s work has been widely recognized in selective open exhibitions, including The Three Counties, The Williamson, and Gallery 16 in Cheltenham. She was the overall winner of the 2026 Open at the Old Lock Up Gallery in Cromford, and was proud to be selected for the prestigious Royal Cambrian Academy Open the same year. Her work has also been preselected for the Mall Galleries Royal Institute of Oil Painters Open. Kate exhibits and sells her work both locally and regionally, and is represented by The Jetty Gallery in Oban. She paints in oils and although her subjects are still life and landscapes, these are simply the departure point for exploring atmosphere and memory and the physical language of paint.

She works intuitively, building and disrupting surfaces, interested in the point at which representation begins to break down. Forms emerge, dissolve and reappear, are simplified and edited back, inviting viewers to explore the space between observation, recognition and abstraction. Light and surface take precedence over description, in a search to create works that balance structure with ambiguity. Her work explores what remains after details have been stripped away: atmosphere, rhythm, light and presence.

Her paintings are driven by a search for visual economy, where a single mark can hold both structure and emotion. They are a negotiation between control and uncertainty, inviting slow looking and multiple readings.
